Can you grow butternut squash or cougettes up a wigwam?  I too am running out of space.

Yes to butternut as long as it the vining one, most are, and no tu courgettes as they are all bush.  XX Jeannine

I built a wigwam den last week and have planted out 3 Buttercup Burgess and 2 Red Kuri around it. I'll take a picture tomorrow!

I have never seen them but there was something in the paper the other day about climbing courgettes called Tromboncino.

I bought some cheap green metal arches that I'm going to have a go at growing squashes up....no more space on the ground available! ;D

The packet was from wilkinsons it only says on the front:-  Squash (winter) butternut...is this the right one to grow up a wigwam?

Kippers, if that is all it said then I would be fairly sure it will vine, there are many advances on the original but all have names .......something Butternut.The original that was just called Butternut will grow up, you will need to  tie it on though, it will not support itself.XX Jeannine

Re climbing corgettes. Thre are one or two that vine, but they are not true courgettes, the flesh is firmer and they usually keep longer more often than not they are found among the winter squasheseven though thay are part of the pepo family which is most of the summer squash,they are technically a  a gourd.

Trombocino is one as is Lungo Biancadi Sicilia,both are Italian and both will vine. Thet are usually refferred to an Cocozelles. If eaten immature they will serve as a courgette, but if allowed to reach their full potential they lose their appeal to most people  become tastless and tough compared to most other squash.

I always grow squash and cucumbers on wigwams because otherwise the slugs eat the baby squashes/cucumbers before I can get to them.

I have a theory that the slugs and snails won't notice the plant if all there is at ground level is a woody bare stem. (I cut off any leaves which drag on the ground and weed well all round - I think molluscs like shady hiding places)

So can I grow all squash up a wigwam? Shame about the courgettes, as I was hoping to grow them up too.

ooo, I've got a garden arch loitering around somewhere, think I'll get it set up for one of my butternuts.  How big would a wigwam need to be for a butternut - mine did a fair amount of trailing last year.  How about two arches with canes in between ... hmm

My butternut squash plants went to thirty feet last year along the ground - cj, can I share your pylon?

Why not find a suitable one near your pumpkin. If we encourage everyone to do the same, we could change the face of Britain! Imagine all the ugly metal pylons being covered in pumpkin plants ;D

We could even try using wind turbines. Perhaps that would please the people who think they are ugly. Mind you, it could be a real problem if they get too high, and get wrapped aropund the blades :o
