HI Guys,

I am sure someone has an answer for me.

Last authum i was given a large peony which after flowering was dug up and put in a pot for me.

I replanted the Peony in 3 as it had fell into 3 clumps.

The roots were very wet and smelly when i planted them, but i have been watering them as with other things this spring and i did water at the time of planting and topped up with compost.

So far there is no new growth, the old growth is very dark as it was when i got it.

I am worried i have lost the plants??

My tree peonys are up and growing well and i would have expected the bush peonys to be comming up now.

My peonies have been up for about four weeks and are starting to come into flower. It doesn't sound very promising for yours :(

I am wondering if i have buried the plant 2 deeply (The top of the crown should be no more than 5 cms (2 ins) below the soil surface) and since i have topped up the soil i am wondering if thats the problem.

I think tomorrow i might very gently uncover one and see whats happening.

I would say the top of the crown should not be covered at all (a bit like Rhubarb)

Paeony's don't take kindly to moving.

Fingers crossed that you don't find they have rotted away.

As long as it hasn't rotted, it'll recover, they're tough enough. The worst you're likely to do is stop it flowering. But if it's not up yet, that's worrying. Mine are budding merrily. I don't like the sound of 'wet and smelly' roots; that results from waterlogging, and a lot of plants are killed by that.

There was a pocket of water in the bag the pot was in which had a frog living in which is where i think the smell came from.

I have been out today and i gave a couple of the stems sticking up a jiggle, and they feel quite solid which is good news. I just think that there planted a little 2 deep so if i lift them up then they might recover.

I have some growmore which i am going to give all the plants a feed with this week so i will check the peony before i feed and maybe this might kick it into some action.
