Marg sounds about the same size as when i got mine back in the good old days of 1991  ;D

We paid the grand sum of seventeen squid which of course then was a lot to pay, its a 'magnolia Susan' and i just stuck it in the ground and prayed....lol

Sixteen years on, ive had so much pleasure from it and i have the added bonus that the blue tits love it too.

I reckon youv'e got yourself a right good bargain there  ;)

It is vital with Magnolia to plant the tree at the same depth as before. While this is normal advice for most plantings, Magnolia will drown if the 'above-ground' bark is put below soil surface.

I bought 3 magnolia seedlings for 50 pence each 10 years ago and they all did well.  They were all dug up and moved when 5 years old and 2 years ago we moved again. The magnolia kobus at 8 years old was by now too big to move, but magnolia stellata and the purple magnolia lilliflora "nigra" were uprooted and moved again. They are both in tip top condition. It appears that they are tough plants.

I bought a magnolia ten years ago from Bluebell Nurseries, I picked it up at the 'foot long stick' stage. The description of a yellow magnolia that didn't get too big, variety 'Butterfly' was enough to convince me to buy it. We had not long moved to this house, so I planted it not having any plans exactly where it should go. It took 6 years to get to flowering size, but look at it now.....

If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴
