I`ve been busy until just now and was suprised that nobody mentioned that this was the time to harvest overwintering pineapples

Actually Cleo, I was just going to put a post on about how to plant one!!! I just got one yesterday and was going to have a go with the green top, I have never done this properley  before.

I usually grow mine from seed!!

Help on starting one off please ...seriously.

Don't they take 2 years to grow!

Mr Flowerdew grows them and so did that wonderful gentleman Harry Dodson so I guess it`s possible

my oh grew one in the conservatory once it took a few years to fruit,problem was when she cropped it she was so chuffed she wouldnt let us eat it,cos she wanted to show everybody it.

Posted a question about propagation many weeks ago.
My plant has been slow but having a poke about has shown some roots are starting to emerge so am going to persevere.

You beat me to it! I was just going to say Jeannine, wait till EJ gets back online - she's done absolute wonders with pineapple. In fact if you do a search for the thread (it may be a couple of years ago now) you'll find the pics she posted of the 'mother and babies' she had grown - gobsmacking!

I am kidding you know about the seeds, but I do want to know about rooting the top bit. XX Jeannine

Don't know if you're aware but Tatton Park has just finished restoring its original Vinery and Pinery in the walled gardens.  Was there last weekend with OH and it looks quite superb.  The volunteer that we were talking to told us that the pineapples are being stored at the moment until the oak leaves have been put in (about a three foot depth!  Maybe more...difficult to see at the moment) which give the valuable tannins that the pineapples will need to grow well.

Should be open to the public for short amounts of time, with volunteers taking small numbers through the Vinery/Pinery at a time.  Can't wait!
