Allotments 4 All

Hi, I recently planted some Datura seeds (17 days ago I think it is now). I'm 13, and relatively new to gardening, so this is a real experiment for me. I was just wondering why none of the seeds have come up yet! I have them in a pot, covered with vermiculite, in a heated propogator in a bright spot. I need to top up te vermiculite as i can see some soil, and I did soa the seeds before planting. Any help?

The secret of good gardening is patience. Just wait a bit. If these are seeds you got when on holiday, you will wait forever. But if they are the seeds you collected from your garden, give them time they will be up as the days get longer.

They should be alright then, just give them time.

Be careful when they grow, they are very poisonous and if you are lucky enough to get them to flower, don't sniff them. They can leave you feeling a bit heady.

Just another little warning - I had a lovely Datura once, then the earwigs discovered it!  I couldn't get rid of them as they got inside the stalks and ate the whole thing in a matter of days.  >:(

I would love to start another one, does anyone have a solution for this?  Maybe it was a one off and isn't normally a problem?  ???

I seem to remember they are slow to germinate, good luck though. As other people have mentioned they are poisonous so be careful, the stems/leaves also used to make me itch which was unusual for me!

OK, thanks all for the advice and warnings. I now have 4 brugmansia's coming up - first one being yesterday, but still no daturas. Will pray for germination!

What is your datura termed as, is it thorn apple or angels trumpets. I may be wrong but datura and brugmansia are the same thing, different names.

I've just been googling as I thought the same as you. I think the name was changed a few years ago.

I think one has the flowers facing up, and the other facing down.Could be wrong though :-\

yeah carolinej's got it right, I've got some brugmansia sanguinea (which are the ones that've come up) and datura (angles trumpet) double blackcurrant swirl - I'm really pleased with the brugmansia's coming up, but am still waiting for the daturas!
