Have been offered spent ground coffee beans ( no pun intended) are they OK to put straight on the ground or will I have to compost them first.

I'd put them straight on the ground - they are a Wonder Mulch IMO ;)
If you do a search on 'Coffee Grounds' there was a good deal of correspondence on this topic last year too :)

Thanks will check - just have to make sure everyone goes to Star Bucks and not Costa Coffee now.

Can you also explain what lasagna beds means ? You have mentioned it before in reply to another question.  I take it it is not and Italian way of gardening !!

just be aware that you need to use these fresh and that it will increase nitrogen in your soil.

Blue Bird

Thanks will have to watch that.
What would be the best ratio to the sq metre?

Robert_Brenchley

They apparently deter slugs, so spread them around anything vulnerable.

Blue Bird

Thanks for that Robert will keep some back for my Hosta's too

Thanks for that I have just read it all and soumds like the type of gardening I could do will try it out amd see!! ;D

I use them around my flower bed, in pots and in the compost bin.  But don't rely on them as a slug deterrant, they don't work in my experience.
