having taken on the plot in July I only had time to plant autumn king carrote which are proving to be a winner as usual. When we had aplot years ago I always grew St Valerie for my earlies but cannot see any in the catalogues. They were a lovely carrot. tehy had pale yellow cores and were so sweet
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

I'm jealous if you can grow St Valery... I have only just got a plot I can grow any carrots on.. if they germinate! Danvers Half Long have been my most successful variety.
Plants of Distinction have a good range of different carrots...

What I do is to dig a v shaped trench out about 10inch deep and half fill it with stoneless soil then top it up with compost. I always cover them with a fleece cloche to stop the carrot fly. I do the same with my autumn king. Give it a go. It works for me.
