Allotments 4 All

I have a section of my allotment which is full of bindweed (not the large flowers) the roots go down at least 2 spade deep. Ihave sprayed with Roundup but It keeps coming back. Any idea`s which might help?

How often do you get to the plot? Many people dig loads out and then let the small bits they missed make new growth and develop the roots again..
Also try barriers to stop it moving sideways... from other plots... Persist and remove all new growth as soon as poss, dig it over again and again, winter and spring you can beat it.... but it's not easy!

I'v had my plot since the end of 1998, and I still have bindweed, so it's not easy. On the other hand, all I now have is either in the hedges or under the paths, where I can't get at the roots, or is little bits that come out easily. It was a nightmare for a year or two, along with the couch, but since then it's been under control, and I just dig it out whenever I clear the bed ready for planting. It's only the ground elder that worries me now, and only in small areas.

Membrane for the paths! For growing areas, mulch over it with minimum of four and up to 8 inches of organic matter - hay, straw, compost, leaves, etc. It won't kill the bindweed, but the few shoots that struggle through to the light can be pulled out by hand at soil level. It still appears on my plot, and I'm sure it always will, but it's a doddle to keep under control and it will eventually give up ::)
