hi all, ive been away a while so im sorry if i repeat, but question is.
ive had psb, cauli & sprouts all growing nicely in pots at home cause i just couldn't get up the Lotty to plant out, they seem to have stopped growing, are about 6" tall with about 4/5 leaves. everyone Else's are enormous please tell me they will catch up.
also the wind blew down all my garlic, Ive staked them back up but they look very sad.
just another quickie, what is the best potato if any to plant now?

Have you checked the Garlic to make sure they are not rotting at the base, could be why they blew down.  They suffer same problems as Onions.

The cauli etc should be fine but get them planted out ASAP if you can, they are getting large for a pot, depending on the size.

They will also use up the nutrients in the compost fairy quickly as they are a hungry feeder. When you plant them out give them a dose of a feed, something like Sulphate of Ammonia is great for them as it is high in nitrogen.

When did you plant the garlic? most of the autumn planted stuff is now ready for harvest so them lying over might be an indication to get in and have a look. I have lifted nearly all of mine now and it is drying in the sun.

Never planted spuds now but there are a few types to grow to get a Christmas crop, have a look at Marshall's website as I believe they do one.

I'd have thought the garlic had fallen over because it's ready! Has it changed colour? If yes, then dig them! (Better done before we have any more rain as that will just rot the outer layers and stop them storing well). I could pop up if you wanted me to and look?
(If I can remember your plot number!)

If garlic's falling over, lift it, let it dry, and use it.

oh s..t >:(
went yesterday and pulled up garlic. layed out to dry, then went out  :'( the heavens opened .will they be alright?

sandersj89

Yes, it is best to try and keep them dry but a soaking now wont be the end of the world expecially if they are up off the ground.

I place mine in a "tray" made out of chicken wire on trestle legs so it is 18" of the floor.

Does anyone else know about planting potatoes now? I had a look at Marshall's but doesn't seem they have one, but never heard of this either? Unless... the tubers they offer are delivered in July, does that mean you plant them then? But the varieties include Charlotte, which are second earlies??  ???

sandersj89

Sorry, it was DT Brown I saw them on,

If you plant early spuds now, they take about 80-ish days to mature, so you'll have them in late October-ish :)
If you plant maincrop, and can protect them from the frost, you will have them for Christmas. My lottie neighbour gave me some redskins last year to plant in July, they cropped happily in November.
