I have been trying to grow lettuces for the first time this year.  I have sowed them twice now in a raised bed and no germination.  So I then sowed some in a pot and when the lettuces had a couple of leaves Iplanted them out in the same raised bed and within 2 days all 12 had disappeared.  There is no sign of slugs in the bed so I am at a loss.  The rocket and oriental salad mix I also sowed in the bed as come up and grown really well.

Any ideas?

I was presuming the rocket was too peppery and yes I have pigeons so thats probably it.

Bloomin' sparrows seem to be having a right go at my lettuce, I thought it was slugs/snails at 1st, but now sure it's the spugs!!!

I always sow my lettuce seeds in trays first then re-pot them in single pots and plant them out when they have got a good root on them.  I also have to net my lettuces as we have pigeons nearby too. So far my lettuces have done really well (touch wood!).  :)  busy_lizzie

What type do you grow busy_lizzie?

Hi Mothy, This year I have little gems, webbs wonderful, lollo rosso and buttercrunch (seeds from wattapain).  Also did some perpetual Italian selection in a barrel at home, which was great, but I aways find rocket goes to seed so easily. busy_lizzie

I agree busy_lizzie that rocket shoots to seed in high temps....might ry buttercrunch...does it bolt easily???
