Hi All,
My only apple tree has, for the last two years, produced as I can only describe as a 'fluffy/cotton wool' growth from previously pruned areas of the tree. I have treated these with 'meths'.
I have to admit, that the tree is riddled with 'canker'.
It fruits so well, I don't complain.
The fruit, I know doesn't store, we freeze, & enjoy.
Any comments?

Sounds like woolly aphid. The method you describe for dealing with it isn't an approved method. I have heard of other people using methods such as applying a product like Provado Ultimate Bug Killer Concentrate which contains imidacloprid onto the areas, but must emphasise that this also is not approved.
You could also try using approved methods such as derris or Savona or a product like Sybol Extra, which contaims bifenthrin.
Do try and get rid of them, as the aphid acts as a vector for diseases.

Palustris

There is an organic product made now as a winter tar oil wash. This does reduce the problem quite considerably. Fortunately the aphids do not produce overwintering eggs in Britain yet, Personally I prefer not to have my fruit sprayed with any chemicals and in the past we removed the woolly aphids with water and a stiff brush. This works!

I favour the stiff brush method, but mine are all on manageable rootstocks so no Tarzan impressions!
