Allotments 4 All

I am fairly new to veg growing and new to this forum (but finiding it very usefull).

Is there an ideal size to harvest raddish or does it not matter - I pulled up a monster tonight and it was fantastic.  Are they better small or does it not matter?

better small i think as they very quickly bolt and become woody then

the bigger they get, the hotter they get, if you've plented them pretty close together, just keep picking them when you need them and let the rest grow bigger in the space if you want them hotter. also you can keep sowing them, so sow, grow, pick and eat to what ever you desire! i'm sure you've seen what size you get them at in veg shops. i've found that if you leave the leaves on too long they get limp, so i've started cutting leaves off when first picked, hope this helps. This is very much a variety thing.

But generally with varieties such a French breakfast or Cherry belle if they get too big they turn pithy.

Then again Summer Cross a 'mooly' variety can be 6"-8" (150-200mm) long.

Black Russian will grow to Tennis/cricket ball size.

So as you see it is very much a variety thing.

My preferance is Summer cross because of its keeping qualities and lateness of harvest.

I choose a couple of plants to leave to bolt - radish seed pods are sooooo delish!
