Allotments 4 All

Hi,

I have never grown tomatoes before so would appreciate a bit of advice from the experts!

My tomato plants are about 6 weeks old now and for the past 3 days I have put them out during the day to harden them off a bit and to try and stop them getting too leggy. Now some of them have white patches and curled bits at the ends of their leaves. Have they been scorched by the sun or might they need potting on from there 3-4" pots?? I put them in full sun because I figured they wouldn't get enough light in the shade, is this correct?

I am wondering when they will be ready to go out permanently, they're not very bushy at the moment :-\ I was going to grow them in 9" pots in their final position, do i need to fill the pots with compost from grow bags or will normal compost be ok???

I am on my way over to Long Eaton to collect from a friend who did exactly the same! We are having a plant Sale on Sunday, but I doubt you are going to deliver them to Derby. As long as you haven't got a lot of scorch it won't be a problem and I would think you are safe to put them out this weekend.

It did make me laugh reading you have 50 plants!  My first year of growing dwarf beans I ended up with 50 plants and keep them all, both neighbours were sick of the sight of dwarf beans by the end of summer!!   ;D

Regards the soil question, you should use normal compost no need to use growbag soil.   Sorry can't help you out regards the scorched leaves, I'll leave it to the experts to help you out on that one!

50 plants? I ended up with many so many seedlings that I have 100 plants, and since I have the space, I planted them all !!!

You can never have TOO many toms  ;D ::)
Make luurvely pasta sauce - freeze it - taste the summer in January.
So many things to do with them!
I currently have 8 in the grrenhouse in upended growbags ( a la Tim  ;D)
18 in the newly dug raised beds - an 20 'ish left that hopefu;;y will go out on the lottie this weekend  ::)
And I've also sold a few - err about 30 for my local hospital (where I work) fundraising  sale.

Thanks for all the replies, I am glad I'm not the only one to end up with too many plants! I will plant as many as I can find pots for and try and give the rest away to relatives, friends and anyone else who will have them.

I have about 150 baby Nabbington Leek plants, they are supposed to be difficult to propagate!!!!
