Last year I left a couple of leeks go to flower, it caused some interest on the lottie to say the least. I was going to collect the seed later but never got round to it.
Today I decided to dig up that aera and to my surprise I found loads of leek seedlings up to 1 1/2 inches high.
Delighted I was but the  only problem was the day before I sowed a whole row of leek seeds.
So they had been in the ground all winter how hardy is that.

One year I left some Snowball turnips over winter, and let them flower in the spring. I didn't use that bit of ground for some reason, probably pressure of work, the usual trouble. So I let the seedlings grow, and ended up with a mass of turnips. Given that brassicas are such notoriously promiscuous interbreeders, I was interested to find that they appeared to have bred true.

Oh Robert,
Its like having plants for free, mine are going to get put in trays and grow on untill I can get more ground dug over for them. Hope they come they were not F1 so will be interesting have given some away allready I only have half a lottie.

When should i transplant me leek seedlings from trays in to the ground?>

teresa

Normaly when they are the thickness of a pencil.
Some cut the top down a bit and trim roots I dont bother just get them as deep as you can for a white shaft. Just leaving a tip showing above the hole.
I use a dibber out of a spade handly so large hole. Leek in and fill hole with water and leave eventualy it will grow and fill the hole the shaft will. Dont fill in the hole.
Works for me.

I currently have mine in a seed tray - no depth and close together. Should I pot them on prior to pricking out? If so any advice on size of pots, spacing etc

teresa

If you sow in trays sow thinly is the key you can transplant them into another seed tray say 20-30 plants per tray or if an inch or so high if you have a lottie plant outside in a drill you can do a row or a block seedling bed. and grow on this way. water in well and pull the earth up around them a little.
Warmer weather comming so they should take off. Says me hopefully.
