Green Water

Hello Everyone

My problem is that I have 2 water butts with water in which is a green color but does not smell like stagnant water yet is their anything i can do to clean the water.

All advice gratefully received.

I've seen a net of barley straw used to de-green a pond before.  Failing that, can you filter the water when you run it off?  Lance

If the butts are covered to prevent light getting to the water, I think that may prevent the greening, but whether it will remove it once it is there, I couldn't say ...

Cover it. Once you cut off the light, the algae die in short order. What you have is an algal bloom; ie the growth of very large numbers of microscopic algae, in this case green ones. When I had one in my water butt, I had a plague of gnats shortly afterwards, as the larvae fed either on the algae or on smaller animals which in turn fed on the algae.
