Allotments 4 All

Hi all,
I have 2 queries about raspberries that I hope you can help me with.
(a) I planed canes of Autumn Bliss a few months back and am wondering when I will see new growth. I know that it has been a cold spring so-far, but I was expecting to see new growth from underground before this.

(b) When should one mulch around these new canes? Should I mulch now, or wait until all new growth has appeared through the ground? I was thinking of using some mini-chipped bark that I had left over from preparing paths as the mulch.

Hi Thomas.  I was given three autumn raspberry canes by a kind poster on this forum late last year.  To my delight I noticed the first new growth on one of them today.   ;D  I mulched mine with leaf mould as soon as I planted them up so I think you'd be well advised to do it now, but not right up to the canes.  I'm not too sure about mini-chipped bark as a mulch.  It needs to be well composted because if not, it will take valuable nutrients from the soil.

My Autumn Bliss are beginning to show as well. Just tiny shoots though. I hope to weed thoroughly around them tomorrow and then put down chicken manure to fertilise  and leaf mould to act as a mulch.

I moved my autumn raspberries to a new position and cut them down last month.  As I was moving them, I noticed small shots, so was worried that they would be set back. 

Being the impatient type, I couldn't resist ferreting around the canes to see if the new shoots were growing - and YES they are :)

I have raspberry bushes on my plot that I took on last year and did have a harvest off them in september but I havent a clue how to care for them. What I have done is cut all the canes right down to ground level in january and im hoping I havent done the wrong thing, also cut back my redcurrant bushes  :o  The raspberry bushes were very straggly and all underneath them is moss!!! but nowhere else on the plot, its almost as if moss was planted around them purposely  ??? maybe Il dig the moss out so they can be mulched properly  ???

Just come back from the allotment and the raspberries that I moved and cut down last month have just pushed above ground ;D ;D ;D

ive 3 tiny canes in a pot in my back yard - and they have little leaves coming out .. ;D ;D ;D

I'd cut the raspberry canes down a little later next year, around about March. I wouldn't have cut back the redcurrants too much, they are different to raspberries and need to form a permanent structure with fruiting spurs. Redcurrant is a bit like gooseberry in that respect, so in around mid August, just reduce new growth by about a third - don't cut back the old wood - it fruits on the older spurs that form along the branches. It is best to ensure that the bush is not crowded though, and form a goblet shape by removing branches from the centre. You want a central trunk supporting a cup shape of branches ideally.

hi everybody ;D I have autumn bliss, I planted 5 in Oct/Nov time last year and 4 of mine have new shoots and 1 looks like a dead stick in the ground ??? I think I might of planted them to deep ??? ???
