Need some advice please  :D
I'm wanting to grow mustard this summer, the yellow flowering one that you see in fields everywhere. It's lovely, home grown and makes a fab curry!
Do I grow this from the brown mustard seed you can buy in shops?
Has anyone any experience of growing, if so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks - CF

yes.
I grow mine as green manure only but it is the same stuff.

thanks blight, so when do i plant the seeds?  ???

when you don´t expect any more frost. established plants can stand a few degrees of frost but seedlings probably not. as they grow so fast, you could try to sow a few seeds  every fortnight or so till september to have a steady supply.

Thought the yellow flowering thing you see in the fields everywhere was oil-seed rape, Brassica napus napus ? (gives me severe hayfever!)

I think true mustard is Brassica juncea (brown mustard) and Brassica hirta (white mustard) but I may be wrong!

mine is called sinapis alba.
commercial mustard is made up from sinapis alba and brassica nigra.
sinapis alba is grown on a vast scale as a green ferilizer after wheat, barley etc. in my parts. so is rape (brassica napus) for its seed (oil)

Be aware that getting the seed out of the pods is rather longwinded ... :D

Brassicas do have seed pods, but I've never tried getting the seeds out of them.

I am not kidding you CardinalFlower, I sowed some mustard once to get a crop, and didnt realise that the seeds were in pods. I gave up in the end, but I wish you more luck!
