I want to grow some Perpetual Strawberries in a large Strawberry planter and I was wondering when would be the best time to start. I am looking at buying the plants but am not sure whether to do this now or wait a while.

Would the plants need protection from frost if I started them now because I don't have a greenhouse.

Also can anyone recommend a variety that grow well in containers? I am thinking of getting either 'Mara des Bois' or 'Flamenco'.

Thanks   :)

I grow them, started from seed a few years back so no idea of the  variety I am afraid.

I started from seed and sowed in December and then planted them out into 10" pots.

They have been left to it ever since with little care other than a feed now and then. Very hardy and tough.

Hi all,
I bought some called "Elan",the crops i had last year were outstanding,- constantly fruiting ,even into the first frosts.
Mine were bought in B&Q about 3yrs ago, last year i split them into new plants and re-planted,and their flavour is superb! ;D

                                   Regards,
                                          Mark.
i`m not "young enough" to know everything !
