Allotments 4 All

I've been inspired by the GW fruit special....

Would a cherry (on dwarf roots of course) grow and produce a decent crop in a large pot?

If so - can you recommend any varieties? I want a dessert one and tend to prefer the sweet juicy big black fruits.

I was watching Sarah Raven a little while ago, Merton Glory was the Black Cherry they were discussing.

I'm sure if the pot (maybe 1/2 tub) was big enough the tree would be fine.

I used to have apples and a John Downey in pots, they were fine.   :)

I grow morello cherry in a big pot (it moved with me three times). Mine is quite happy in a pot and produce decent crop every year. I think the rootstock was semidwarf. I usually put them in vodka and sugar to make cherry wine (yum!).  I know morello is less vigorous than sweet cherries but I think sweet cherries are also worth growing if you can have a big pot in your garden.  :)
