I have access to a lot of clear plastic drinking  glasses, of the throwaway type that are from  dispensers. My question is - can I use these as I would flowerpots, to grow seedlings in prior to planting out. Or will the roots not like seeing daylight when they reach the plastic?

Any advice much appreciated.

I grew loads of plants last year in clear plastic cups with no problem...but is you are worried do as loulou suggests, or you could wrap some newspaper around them.

For seedlings, yes, never been a problem for me. :)

But be careful to pot them on when they're getting bigger -  if they're the fairly small-size cups, they wouldn't hold much compost and might dry out pretty quickly.. Especially if they're in full sun.

(I use all sorts for growing seeds - pop bottles, plastic milk bottles, those 'propagators' you get from Safeway with free cookies in them..)

Maybe try lining with newspaper ???

I use them the other way around.
Upside down, they fit snugly just inside small pots to provide an individual mini-greenhouse effect.
