Hi all

Bought some oregano seeds today, anyone got any particular tips with growing this from seed?

Also, the packet says it can take 21 days to germinate and needs to be quite warm. Any way to hurry this up, like with parsley where you pour boiling water on it to help it germinate?

Wow Moggle,  had no idea that you could do that to Parsley   ;D  Do you just pour over the water and then sow, or do you soak the seeds?

All I know of oregano is it needs 10-13 deg C. (50-55 deg F) to germinate!  Sorry not much help!

never grown it from seed, but a couple of years ago whilst visiting a well known diy store they had some herbs for sale, looking what a rip-off price they were and not having the patience to grow from seed, i nicked a small cutting off one of the plants!!!! really naughty i know, but it comes back every year and seems happy where it is!!!

My oregano self seeds between the paving stones, so I imagine it's easy from seed. As for parsley, yes you do just pour boiling (well, just boiled) water over it after sowing. It's something to do with large fluctuations in temperature helping germination.

I am now pondering how to get boiling water on my allotment.  :-\

Just take it in a Thermos flask. Should be hot enough ;).

But my flask has coffee in, dear Dandelion, dear Dandelion ...  :D

In that case, pour coffee on the parsley seeds and ruin the slugs' appetite too ;D!

Started my parsley inside last year would this do for oregano too?? ???

If you've got a shed, have some sort of stove in it. I wouldn't be without the means to make a cup of tea, and boiling water is bound to be needed occasionally.
