I have had an outstanding onion crop this year, so I was surprised when my carrot crop was even better ... Varieties Autumn King and Berlicum, they are both producing carrots bigger than most parsnips.
No special preparation or tending either, just planted, thinned and allowed to get on with it.

This little beauty here (Autumn King) drew a few unrepeatable comments from my neighbours, it measures 11 inches by 4 inches diameter, the same size as a 2 litre pop bottle, and weighs 3 1/2 lbs ... and it is not alone. I think we will be living on carrots all winter now ...

Hi Derek  :D
Wow !  what a big one,  ::)  I`m afraid I can`t match that, I pulled all my carrots when they were small, BUT i bet someone out there has one just a tiny bit bigger ???

nice carrots Derick  I have grown autumn king as-well and have been very pleased with the results, but I must admit my first two sowings were a washout this year.
Richard       If it's not worth having I will have it

Make the most of today, because you'll never have it back again.

And there was me thinking my 8" carrot was a good size.

eep!

I too grow Autumn King, though Early Nantes for the first (cloche-sown) lot. They fork more though, and I'm not sure why I don't grow AK from the start.

For me, the most delicious carrots are the summer thinnings, just washed and eaten raw with aioli (garlic mayonaise).
After that, these monsters (yes plural) of mine still have a good carrot taste, and they are generally not woody either, except for a few that have suffered lack of moisture. They are not a problem, as I still have more than I can cope with ...
