Allotments 4 All

Any ideas on this one? I have been growing brittle beurre bush beans (yellow) which have been v. prolific ;D. About 1/3 of the beans are nice and straight, 1/3 are slightly curly, and the remaining 1/3 look like little question marks. It's not confined to one bush, or one side of the bed. I have tried leaving some of the curly wurlies to grow to see if they would straighten up but this doesn't seem to work. How can I get long straight beans like wot they are in the catalogue please ???

No solution to offer if they are bush tyupes but does it matter, SS? Taste will be the same - all good stuff anyway.  Had the same thing with french climbing beans (got cuaght in the growing tendrils) and most of the curly ones I let develop a bit bigger (and coarser?) than the rest and chucked them in with the roasted veg.....

I have no answers SS, but would consider the question, does your toast alway land butter side down ...

I would check the pods, on the inside of the curl, to see if you can see any physical damage (probably brown areas at this point). Sounds like something (insect or bacterial) attacked the tissue and killed it so that it didn't grow properly.

How many of the beans have developed? I always get some curly beans, and haven't thought about it much, but I wonder whether it's either physical damage or poor pollination.

Thank you for these replies peeps!  ::)All the beans developed and I had a wonderful crop, but I want straight beans like they show on the packet! So I don't think it's pollination - maybe it's normal to have a proportion of curly beans ???
