I was given a small punnet of Jerusalem artichokes by my lottie neighbour yesterday. She had planted them thinking they were sunflowers! ??? !(are the seeds similar?). Anyways, can I just bung these into the ground or do they have to be prepared in some way?, and if so when? Oh, I might as well ask another question while I'm here. Would it be a bad idea to plant onion sets where we have just picked the last of the scallions?

This post was brought to you by Looby Loo's OH (a specialist in asking stupid question since 1970 at least)

Jerusalem artichokes are as tough as anything and will grow anywhere. You can leave them in the ground from year to year, so you're probably best just putting them in and leaving them.
