Hello

When i was in Corfu recently i had many Greek salads, Tomato salads and Tomato and cucumber salads, as you can tell i like me salads  :)

Anyway the reason i'm creating this post is becasue the Tomatoes were the most amazing i have ever tasted. My wife put it into a nutshell when she said "after eating those you now know why the tomato is a fruit"

Talk about melt in your mouth. They seemed to have hardly any seeds and were all "meat" and a deep succulent red color. Ummm loverly.

These Toms were all of the Beef variety, big round fat Toms they all were, would anyone have any idea what type of Toms these may have been and if we have an equivalent juicy tom over here that i could try and grow.

I think that they were that good because of the growing conditions as opposed to the variety.

I grew-up up in southern colorado in the states... We had the similar tasting tomatos there...  But we had summers in excess of 100 degrees and long summers...

I have not been able grow the same taste here in the UK.

i say we all go back to colorado with martha !!!

Tasting greek tomatoes 12 years ago was what started me eating tomatoes fresh. Unil then I had only cooked with them.

So when I started gardening 2 years ago one of the aims was to recreate the taste. This year I have grown Franchi Marglobe. They have not grown to the plate sized tomatoes from Greece, but the taste is similar. I have saved some seeds from these that you are welcome to, but as this is my first attempt at saving seeds I cannot guarantee success.

Cheers

Thank you very much, i owuld love some of your seeds, as i've never done this sort of thing before i assume i shall have to wait until next year before planting them out, can they be planted out doors or must i leave them in the greenhouse?

Ideally i would like to leav them in the greenhouse

Having just come back from Corfu myself, I would just say that while agreeing that the toms are great, the lack of variety of vegetables grown on the island (not sure about the mainland) seems surprisingly limited. Most people seemt to grow zuccini (courgettes), the occasional French or runner beans on their smallholdings and some odd looking cabbages. That's pretty much it!! Can't blame them I suppose. Too busy enjoying themselves, and who wouldn't be with that cllimate ...

The best variaty i know from greece is called thessiloniki,i have grown them this summer and they taste so good, real fleshy, full of flavour.

Thanks Ruud, they sound like the ones i should try, any idea where the best place to get hold of the seeds is?
