I bought an ogen melon plant from GC few weeks ago, it was about 5" i transplanted it into a small water butt type thing. As one post said 'dont water until dried out' thats what i've done. its in the front of my vine house (plenty of sun) but the house has several glass roof panels missing. The bloopy thing isnt growing! ??? Also, it actually looks like there are two plants there. Its only grown about 1/2 - 1". Any ideas anyone? should i feed it, and what with. there isnt much growing instructions on label at all. never grown melon before so plenty of advice would be received with glee :)

If only I knew!  Every year I sow stacks and stacks of different melon seeds, and they all germinate amazingly well....make a leaf or two, then slowely, ever so slowely, die!  I have tried keeping them dry, hot, cold, wet, talking to them, pleading with them, more light, less light....etc....etc...but no luck to date.  Will wait and see what the experts have to say about this.

I'm in the same boat!! Yet to have any success.  I have 2 lovely plants about 6 inches high, trouble is, they've been 6 inches high for about 3 weeks now!! Like they're growing in a time warp!! No change at all. Hope to find out too. Lottie  ;D

You can add me to those sitting on the confused couch!

My ogen have been germinated for a few weeks now and are still small.
I am going to plant them in my cold frame anyway this weekend, and let them get on with it.

When I grew melon successfully outdoors, I treated it like a tomato. Potted it on into a planter filled with coir (I think) - it was that stuff you get in blocks, stick it in a bucket of water and let it swell. Plenty of water and sunshine and a bit of oomph from the heat did it for me.
Mind you, that was two years ago and what sent it absolutely bananas (!) was a couple of days of scorching weather - do you remember the headlines when some places reported 100 degrees?
Sadly, last year, July's monsoon put paid to my chances.

I reckon you'll be okay if you can keep your seedlings healthy, in plenty of light with decent watering, until the hot weather comes in...

so roll on 2007, then...

If you think of them as a kind of Squash that needs to be kept warmer than usual they are quite straight forward, I plant them in a simple timber surround about 2 foot 6 by 3 foot 6 with a sheet of perspex on top, plenty of compost, plenty of water & plenty of sunshine
