It is with deep sadness that I have to inform you all that I have had a death in my Starling Nursery. Some bas***d magpie swooped down as they were being fed by mum. One of the poor little things flew the wrong way straight into my lounge window. He sat for a while stunned. Eventually he managed to begin to flutter away through the garden gate whereon he came face to face with his tormenters. I managed to frighten them away and tried to rescue the baby but it was alas too late and he died in my hands. I left him outside on the edge of the road and now he has gone so somebody managed a nice plump starling chick for dinner.
ps there now appear to be about 3 families of them all feeding at once. It is costing me a small fortune

Oh, such a shame, Jane :(

Love the picture though.  Look at those two littluns face to face, they look as if they're having a good old chat!

Nature is cruel isnt it?  :'(
A friend is someone who thinks you are a good egg,
even though you are slightly cracked.

The Magpies have been hovering again today. I have had to chase them out of the garden several times. I know they have to eat too but why can't they go and do it where I can't see the results.

So sorry to hear this sad story Jane  :'(

Unfortunately that is wildlife over which we humans have no power.  You did your very best to help the little one and don't blame yourself.  Good luck with feeding the millions !  ;D ;)
Enjoy today to the full.  You are not sure of a tomorrow.

Our "babies" are now a constant source of amusement to us. We find ourselves spending hours watching them and their antics. I have this evening had to put a fresh supply of water in the wheelbarrow as they seem to prefer this to the birdbath!

they are so sweet its sad when something like that happens after all the weeks of being in the nest and cared for  :'(
