Gorgeous colour!    I would love to try one of these.  I have got some seeds but never got round to putting them in the freezer etc. etc.

Very nice, but since it took so long to download at that size I did not see it all.
I have just pricked out a couple of hundred seedlings of M. soi dit betonicifolia, it will be interesting to see what they actually are, if I can keep them going to flowering size that is. They are awkward things, germination is dead easy, but growing on phewwww!

Sorry - I didn't intend it the picture to be big - the software thingy said it would resize it if it was too large ...  I'll remember to shrink them first next time...  :-[

Have to admit I didn't grow them from seed - I bought three young plants from Penlan Perennials in Feb.  But they've said if I let them self-seed in situ I should get seedlings next spring to prick out - winter should do the refrigerator job for me.  I decided that it was worth saving a year since I had the spot ready for them.

First of all, Meconopsis have this nasty habit of not seeting seed, without you acting as the bee!. Secondly what you think of as seed may be just the unfertilised remains of the carpels,the seed is actually quite a reasonable size rather than dust grains. Third, if you sow the seed as soon as the capsule begins to split, it will germinate within a very short time. It has quite a short shelf life,so I would not keep it until Spring myself. Have fun!

I tried growing these from seed, not easy. Got one to sprout, withered in days. Think I'll go buy a plant........................................

It's fully open now.  Bluer than a very blue thing.  Am going to pollinate it later - these are supposed to be self-fertile

I tried to germinate some seed but it all went to pot, or not  :P ::)

Green Wiz - you really can't beat a bit of reproductive activity in the afternoon...!

Since a few of you have mentioned growing them, here's a plug for the nursery I bought them from mail order.  They've been really helpful and friendly, especially when they sent me the wrong Trilliums by mistake  and offered to replace them before I even noticed!

I went to Harlow Carr Gardens with my OH and saw these blue flowers, couldn't remember the name, just knew it began with M.  Now I know, they were Mecanopsis. 

Just beautiful they were.

Lots of goodies on that site! I'm beginning to plant up about 40 feet of flowerbed under my hedge - it's no use trying to grow veg. in it - and I'm grateful for all the sites I can find. What Trilliums do you grow? I have lots of Kurabayashii which someone gave me in return for dealing with a wasps' nest - would you believe it he was digging the things out and was going to throw them!!!!

Hi Robert,

Let's just say my on-line name is more aspirational than actual!  I spotted several trilliums growing at Dunham Massey in Cheshire a few years back and picked up on the name.

Once I'd got somewhere for them to grow I ordered several Trillium grandiflorum early this year - unfortunately I ended up with Trillium luteum through a labelling mix-up.  This is being sorted so I'll end up with both.

So truth is, right now I'm accidentally growing Trillium luteum - and that's it!
