LUPINS

Can anyone help me with why my Lupins never grow much further than, getting lots of foliage that gets eaten by snails etc, i do put pellets down and they are ok for a short time but they just seem to give up the ghost about the same time every year, i like them so much what can i do?? i have grown some from seed and bought some and they all go the same way!!!.
I thought of growing them in pots, would that be a better option. Would they do any better in pots?.
Any suggetions would be welcome. ;D.   Rosebud.

Are you possibly overfeeding them ??  Sometimes, when you feed them nitrates, it encourages the production of leaves.

No Marianne, they are not being over fed. when i said lots of foliage i meant the usual amount really , just they were growing good, and then they just give up.

Check the roots for leather jackets or other root eating grubs

I had problems growing lupins a couple of years back. I grew the lupins in a container and they looked really good initially - some even began flowering. But the slugs and snails absolutely decimated them within a couple of weeks. I even tried various anti slug/snail techniques ( like broken eggshell and copper tape), but the slugs and snails won the day.

When plants don't stand up to these slimey beasts then I just accept that my garden will have to be filled with other more slug/snail-resistant plants. The battle of man against slime beast has been going on for years, but I reckon they will always be the winner.

Don't think this helps you much, though, Rosebud, does it. After all Lupins seem to be very happy in the wild, like up motorway embankments. Maybe the cultivated forms are just to weak and pathetic to withstand too much grazing?
