Some people at our lottie complex use vinegar between paving slabs against weeds there, seems to work.

Marianne

Ah ! Ina ! What good news !  I have lots of weeds on my patio and refuse to use weed killer which I hate !

Now I will try vinegar ....  Is that pure or diluted ??::) ;D

Vinegar (Acetic acid) is wonderful stuff...I use it, albeit in a slightly different form (without the odour) all the time during the course of my work.

There is a whole range of uses, so much so there is a book all about it...run a search on the internet

This sounds brilliant  :o ,l don't like using chemicals on the patio because of the dogs.

Will give it a go  ;D

Yes, use it pure- squirt it on- im experimenting with every weed i can- glad to see ive started a vinegar revolution.

Just been out to inspect the weeds i soaked- theyre dying rather nicely 8) so it looks like vinegar is useful- every type- dock, dandelion, thistle, and others i cant identify have all got burnt dry patches where the vinegar has got them. I will try to get my camera working for a piccie, and ill let you know when they are completely gone

I started a topic about vinegar a while back- the stuff you buy in shops is 5% acetic acid.     For professional caterers i believe you can get it at 20% strength, it would be interesting to see if the stronger content would be more potent in week killing.

For that matter you can buy glacial acetic acid (80% if I remember right) from a chemist. I don't recommend it unless you know what you're doing with acids! It's used to fumigate empty beehives, and it's so corrosive that it rots concrete, and the fumes alone will eat through the nails holding a hive together.

derbex

I remember making acetic anhydride for school chemistry -lovely stuff turns to vinegar on your eyeballs.

lets not get all technical with glacial vinegral percentificating chemistry :o

Vinegar on paths and slabs - OK.  But a question about vinegar on vegetable beds - what effects on the soil, and on all the goodies?

All best - Gavin

telboy

Precisely Gavin.
It's an acid after all, albeit a weak one unless you use (even get hold of) glacial acetic acid - g*d forbid!
Torch the weeds with a Sheen flame gun! Cheap & efficient.

Thought id revive this old thread for an update on my vinegar experiments- very effective for killing dandelion, buttercup and thistle- checked them this morning- all brown and dry. However, it hasnt worked on the dock sample- which as luck would have it is my biggest weed problem- i have loads of them
