Whilst exercising my tight fisted streak last week I salvaged some melon seeds from a rather tasty honeydew melon. Dried them (for all of about an hour - dad was highly amused at that!) and sowed them. Now they have germinated I am panicking slightly!

How big will they get?
Will they self pollinate? If they get that far
How big a pot do they need?
What sort of support will they need?

HELP!

Amazin

I did the same thing a couple of years ago. Unfortunately only one survived - the others were smothered to death by a basking cat. When it had two  (or was it three) true sets of leaves I put it outdoors in one of those square pots with a water reservoir built in at the base - mine was 10" square.
I had a 6ft bamboo cane for it to climb up and it had outgrown that by the time it fruited, so it may be better grown against a wall or fence with some sweet pea netting for support - that's what I'm doing this year.
I didn't touch mine at all apart from watering it, so it must have self-pollinated - although that might depend on the variety.
I guess the main thing is they need a good summer, i.e. a sustained spell of hot weather,  if you're growing them outdoors. Good luck with them!

Good stuff!  Nothing to loose then.  Keep them watered, although not waterlogged whilst in their pot, then in about mid to late May, or June if you are in a frosty spot, plant them out in a really rich patch and you can grow them up, like Amazin, or just let them romp away on the ground.  Mind you, they grow like the clappers and take up a lot of room!  And watch out for slugs and snails as they find members of the squash family delicious!  As for pollination, this has always been shrowded in magical mystery for me and I let nature take care of it.  However, once you see definate fruit setting, I would remove any of the smaller ones so that all of the plants energy can be put into ripening just one or two fruits per plant.  Good luck and keep us posted!
