Garlic and Rust

Has anyone else got rust on their autumn sown garlic? I seem to have a touch of it and think it is way too early for rust.

I have never treated it on aliums, though we do spray the wheat on the farm for rust. Rust is a fugal disease for those of you who do not know.

Will it make a huge differance to both the yield and keeping quality of the garlic? It is most evident of Solent White and Iberian White.

Hi Jerry
Just came on to site to write almost the very same thing.
Being new to Veg growing I was weeding the other day and noticed what I would say is rust however my onions are next to the garlic and they seem to be fine. My books dont seem to have much info on this fungi.  Any answers to this problem would be great and just to make it worse I am growing organic.

last year i got rust on my leeks so i mulched them with wilted comfrey leaves and the rust disappeared and no more appeared....

Thanks all, I will be adding some comfry leaves when they get big enough to harvest!

Hi Everybody,

Is rust forming dependant on the weather ,moist and warm seem like a good combination to help viruses spread. It has been that on and off for a while in sunny yorkshire! ;D ;D

ooo I don't wanna tempt fate, as I haven't any rust yet!  Last year my leeks and garlics were smothered very very early on.  This year, even with the dreaded rot, things are marching along and all looks very strong and healthy.

The over all yield didn't seem to be reduced by the rust (the rot does that for me  :-\) but I did start pulling the garlics sooner than I would have only because they started to become really poorly and weak, and the rust spores seemed to be dropping all over the ground around the plants and I became concerned that this could over winter in the ground!  With my leeks I just removed the first couple of layers, and the inner flesh was fine.  ooooooo am I tempting fate now!!!!
