After much debate Jerusalem Artichokes... I ordered some from BAKKER on line... only to wait 4 weeks for the delivery to find that they are out of stock.

Everywhere I look online they seem to be out of stock... (Victoriana, T&M, FOTHERGILLS etc)

Could not find them in Crew's Hill either on the weekend.

Have i missed my ticket for the pilgrimage to Jerusalem for this year?

I haven't seen them anywhere recently. Sorry Can't be more help.

MarthaMad,

I got mine from a local garden centre in Kent (they only had the one variety). Perhaps it's getting a bit late for them now? Or perhaps the world rulers have finally seen sense and in the interests in the environment and the thinning ozone they have banned them?!

I have plenty of tubers from last year (far more than I ever wanted, for eating or planting), and although they are beginning to shrivel and are out of the ground, they are trying to sprout. I would be happy to send you some (they should be okay for planting still) if you would like.

But remember, a Jerusalem Artichoke isn't just for Christmas, it's for LIFE!!!! ;D

Accept that kind offer-JAs are tough things and will grow well from even slightly shrivelled tubers. I would offer some myself but I dug over the ground a few days back and some decent tubers are now buried in the compost bin-sorry.

Isn't it a bit late for them ?
I planted mine when they arrived back in January/February, and they are up 2 or 3 inches now.

They call it the "Good Life" but it's a b****y HARD life!

Lizard Man

I only replanted mine about a week or so ago and they were only just showing above the soil or just hidden below the surface when I dug them up. And these are from being in the ground since last season. I would be extremely surprised if planting some now will not give a crop this autumn - they are extremely determined little things with an obviously strong lust for life. We shall see...

Get down to the supermarket veg aisle, they'll have plenty there

MarthaMad

Would they grow from supermarket?  Just bung them in the ground?

As easy as that?

Does anyone know how to get rid of them, I filled five bin bags with them last autumn, thought I had got them all up, I was so sure I had got every little bit. Wrong. Theyr'e back just started to show themselves. Help

Mine are re-appearing too Katy, I used them to help break up a clayey bit of ground, I was just going to dig em out when they appear!

Yes, they will grow from supermarket tubers, no probs, but take note of the above posts, once you've got 'em, you've got 'em for life, well maybe not as bad as that, but they do repeat in more ways than one :-[

They're awfully sturdy little things - even here in Norway, they keep coming back up. I had about 1/2 sq m given over to them over the winter, and am now trying to decide whether to just leave them in or move them a bit.

They don't seem to have any natural enemies, so rotation would be more on the principle of things.

Palustris

little? 12 foot monters!!!!!!
rotate. Only if you can dig them out, (hollow laughter).
Weedkiller? yeah same as ground elder and couch and bindweed, in yer dreams!
