From a purely culinary stand-point, Ratte have to be the finest Salad potato available. The taste is superb and they are highly praised and priced by top restauranteures.

The problem on taste is that it is "a matter of taste" ie very subjective. Hence any list should have this caveat and a note of what the taster is looking for.

For those who like the "old fashioned early potato taste" the old varieties such as Arron Pilot and Home Guard are very difficult to beat as,  for a very long time, new varieties were bred to meet commercial criteria such as resistance to mechanical damage, ability to bulk up when lots of chemical fertiliser is added etc. Some of the recent varieties such as Princess are not bad and have much better yields than the older ones.

On second earlies, Charlotte, Kestrel and Catriona take some beating in the taste stakes

For main crop it really is down to what you're looking for:

If it's a fluffy mash then Arran Victory is great
for chips, Golden Wonder (and crisps too - it's from this variety that they got the name!)
roasting, King Edward
baking, Spey, but if you add lots of butter and pepper there are many that taste great

Salad, Ratte does have it over Pink Fir Apple in that it keeps its flavoiur better (and it doesn't grow wherever it wants!!)

I have gone for Charlotte (my daughters name), Rocket, Pentland javelin and Kestrel for the earlies and Romano and King Eds for the maincrop.  We should have a poll at harvest time for yield, taste and resistance to slugs erc.
