We have a really large allotment that is being split in half.  We want to move our red current bush.  Wondering what would be the best way to move it?  Any advice would be helpful.

hmmm, I would think it might be a touch iffy now, however, that said, I moved a couple of blackcurrants a couple of weeks back and they are full of leaf already!  If you have to move it then try to get it up with as much of a rootball as possible, get it back into the ground as quickly as possible, and if the ground is dry, give it a good drink.  You could also get some organic matter into the planting hole and give it a good mulch.  Possibly prune out any weaker stems at that time also.  Good luck!

Bang on, perfect advice, especially keep giving it water, water, water

And welcome of course!  ;D

Hi EJ and Marry Tiller,

Thank you so much for the advice and welcome.  We moved it yesturday.  Plus we got three other red current bushes off it.  I planted the main one and a second shoot and gave the last two to a fellow allotment member.

I have yet to water it but the ground was/is still very damp from all the rain we had.  I will try and water it today.  It has some growth on it so I hope it did not do too much damage.

Moinouvelle,

You should water anything that has been transplanted even if the ground appears damp, best to do as soon as poss to prevent the plant

Love redcurrants and mine have all been moved time and time again and they all seem to do just fine.  In fact, we end up with more currants than you can shake a strawberry at!  Now it is a white currant cutting I am after, so if you have any of those floating around.......

Hello EJ
I brought a whitecurrant from Wilkinson's for £1.99 its sprouting away in the allotment now. Very good price I thought.
