Can I use shredded paper (bank statements, etc) in:

a) my compost heap if I mix it with other stuff?

b) in my bean trench (will it rot down in time for when I plant - NE England) this season?

in my opinion  yes no prob it will hold moisture in the bean trench and aslong as you mix it with green stuff in equal parts will be fine in the composter hope this helps
johhnyc015  may the plot be with you

As Johhnyco said - yes and yes

Good for mulching strawberries - carries less moulds than straw.

Cheers.
With a microholding you always get too much or bugger-all. (I'm fed up calling it an allotment garden - it just encourages the tidy-police).

The simple/complex split is more & more important: Simple fertilisers Poor, complex ones Good. Simple (old) poisons predictable, others (new) the opposite.

My wife gives me a pile of confidential papers every year or so for disposal. I just bury them, it's no problem.

Let your rabbits, hamsters etc "use" it after shredding. Helps it compost and I like to think of my bank correspondence, tax bills etc getting its "proper" reply! Dont use glossy art work, magazines etc, but newsprint is non toxic these days. Brown cardboard boxes, corrugated card, even waxed cartons will rot with the addition of urea (as poultry manure) Try and remove sellotape, though as it seems to be immortal!

I have to admit I take great pleasure in using my boyfriend's dad's old Sunday Mails in my rabbits' litter trays... seems only fitting. :P
