my local store has spring flowering bulbs for sale almost at give away prices. Will it be too late to  plant them ?would they give a later show or more importantly build up enough strength for next years flowering

You can  plant spring bulbs late but in most cases they will not form  enough roots to enable them to flower the next year  however after that they  should be OK.
A friend of mine once left a half bushel bow of show daffs unplanted but when  he saw them growing out the sides of the box he put soil  to keep them moist. They took 2 years to recover but they were Ok. Do remember true bulbs contain the flower embryo and leaves so they have to flower whether planted or not. I have grown show daffs since 1960.

Oh thanks for your reply will buy some or rather a lot as were very cheap only pence and at those  prices I can afford to wait a couple of years for the results  .Planning on planting them in tubs now at least for this season
