I used to use leafmould when I lived in Cornwall.

Thanks Robert
I recently asked a professional about this and he agreed but suggested using twice as much as peat as it erodes faster.

How about coconut coir? The one I get is a premium fine cut grade. I use it in my seed raising and potting mixes.

There may be more benefit in using peat for growing.
