My dad lives in a care home and I'd like to get him a plant for his birthday. Can anyone recommend a house plant that will cope with the all-round heat and possible lack of watering that it will get? He does have a windowsill, but not sure of the aspect.

There are some really nice artificial ones.  Gave my daughter one they have not managed to kill it yet!!  Staff were really pleased they did not have to worry about it.

Hi Caroline

Sorry to hear about your Dad

I would suggest a Streptocarpus simply because of the watering aspect!

These are best left to dry out before watering, meaning that you could water them if needs be on your visits.

I would also suggest one of Dibleys Crystal series as these flowers most of the year round.

I'll leave you with what a typical plant look like when in flower, incidentally this is not one of the Crystal series, thids one is named Kim

Forgot to mention that they do presentation plants as you can see here;
