Yep...good stuff!
I have that kind of systems going on but they are commercially made.
You can also do it 'plant pot on top of bucket' method....either having lidded bucket and cutting hole on the lid or with piece of compost bag/bin liner and instead of bamboo canes supporting the weight of the pot and plant..standing two bricks upright, having gap between each and plant pot sitting on the bricks.
They all work really well as long as the light is cut out from the water holding area.. :icon_cheers:

Go for it girl!  :toothy10:

Thanks for sharing Digaroo.  Will try to give it a bash next season.  Was really envious of your chilli growing system Goodlife but it was beyond my means, however the DIY method looks good.

Lottie...this company has many different designs (and prices) for various planters..they are all basically 'same' just pot sizes and shapes vary. But to give you more idea what you could do....you can rummage your home over the winter and get some systems ready for next year. http://www.greenhousesensation.co.uk/planters-and-pots/plant-guardian-planters/
But be warned...you won't know what to do with all the crops.. :icon_cheers:
