Onion question

How shallow can the soil be to grow my onions?

They don't need very deep soil, but it does need to be well-drained, and they do need enough nutrients.

I've grown garlic and onions in a sort of windowsill tray (6"-9") but as above they do appreciate a good feed up.

What soil do you have? They are gross feeders so well prepared soil is required then they will be fine. I grew loads of onions really thickly on my roof in tubs and had great results..

I have some raised  beds for my strawberries, I was thinking of growing my onions in one of the beds. The soil is only about 4 inches deep though. I will be adding some of my own compost to the soil. Could I mix some growmore in with it, or should I stick to the usual main beds, do you think?

Maybe ok but I'd add more if you can.. Some of my pots were only 6" high on my rook and they grew well..

related question. Noticed the local garden centre is selling off its spring stock now and onion sets are half price. Worth getting some and storing until summer to plant when ones in the ground now are harvested, to maybe get another lot in and grown before xmas?

If I am lucky enough to buy some late onion sets I plant them and use as spring onions. Last year got bags of onions reduced to 10p. Kept us going in onions for yonks.
