Are you the complete KITCHEN GARDENER?

Is your garden, allotment or window box your pride and joy?

Do you grow your own fruit, veg & flowers and do you know what to do with them?

We are looking for talented amateur kitchen gardeners who have the skills and the dedication to compete in BBC2's 'THE BIG ALLOTMENT CHALLENGE'. Someone who can cultivate the perfect carrot, make their green tomatoes into award winning chutney and turn their dahlias and sweet peas into floral arrangements fit for a Queen.

We are offering successful applicants the chance to turn a plot of land into a patch of beauty so if you have the skills to compete and are interested in featuring in our series, please contact grow@silverriver.tv or call 0207 907 3401 for an application form.

The deadline for applications is 12pm on the 13th of March 2014.

Having had a look at the application form, no ta. If it was working on your own place, then yes, it would be interesting, but to put work into another place, once a week (who waters etc when you're not there?) for an incredibly short space of time and then hand it back? No thanks.

I want to work on my own allotment and I have to say the thought of flower arranging makes my heart shudder!

It sounds like it should be an enjoyable programme to watch, http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-11-18/bake-off-meets-ground-force-bbc2-commissions-grow-make-eat-the-great-allotment-challenge. I look forward to it being aired.

I'm afraid taking part is not for me, but it would be tops if someone from A4A was taking part  :icon_cheers:

Are you looking for entrants as pairs or can individuals apply and be teamed up with someone?

Hi there,

Thanks for your question. At the moment we're looking for individuals to apply. Please feel free to forward on to anyone you think might be interested and feel free to ask any other questions you might have!

I will be working on the allotment that I have with my wife and sister. No benefit working on one just to hand it over when the show is finished.

It looks like someone has already spotted that you cannot produce vegetables like you can bake a cake.  Not sure the concept makes sense.

Seems they are doing it at Mapledurham in Oxfordshire which seems to be near Reading.

Stand by your waiting lists folks.   I shall certainly watch the programme with interest.

I once took part in a BBC TV programme, never again, They cut and pasted the filming and I ended up sounding like a complete idiot.  They said we would be paid but mine never arrived.   They did not even pay the train fare having said they would.   When the programme stopped they said it had finished but actually continued filming and some of the later stuff which we were not aware was to be included also got into the mix.  I was furious about the whole thing.  People asked me why I say what I said and found it difficult to understand it had been totally taken out of context.

I do not mind flower arranging, I just do not want to grow vegetable for show, as far as I am concerned they are for eating.   I cannot see the point of growing them for their looks with no regard for their eating quality and flavour.

Strange that it says it's expected to air in early 2014 and that they'll have 4 months before airing, when they haven't even got the competitors yet! Maybe delayed by the weather?

Well they do this sort of thing all the time at shows but of course everything is pre grown so to speak, maybe one for ACE???

Even if there was an outside chance of a jumped up cook, who some of you call celebrity chefs turning up on the programme, I would be off like a shot. Cannot fathom out this peculiar trait of a servant from below stairs messing up good food and everybody praises it, buys the book and then goes back to cooking it properly. It's not going to happen, although I have retired I have been press ganged into growing the plants for the BBC garden for the Gardeners World show at the NEC. I shall not be building the garden this year as I have really had enough of the show circuit. I'll leave that to somebody else.

There is bound to be somebody that wants to sweat and strain, then stand back wringing their hands to be judged so the whole country can join in with their emotions. The biggest critics will be on these boards. Dan had better start a 'You don't want to do it like that' section.  What next? strictly for gardeners   Just picture it, Pumpkinlover setting up a new trend dancing a tango in a camouflaged leotard and sequinned wellies.

My guess is that they already have everything more or less in place for the first series.  I think they will even have 'chosen' the contestants during the planning stage.

Have you been press ganged into producing instant veggie plants for this programme too?
