In the past I have always ripened my pumpkins in the conservatory but I am wondering if this is the best practice.

If it worked then carry on  :toothy10:
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... (over 10 ton per acre)    2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..      see my web blog at...  http://www.gavinconway.net

Mine always get a spell in the conservatory, because you are supposed to 'cure' them in nice warm temperatures.  And the conservatory does still get nice and warm now, warmer than the lounge.

I agree, it works and it is practical.
