Years ago I seemed to be pretty good at this but as the years have gone by I seem to be less and less confident. Now I know what I ike is what is the most important but I think I have blinkers on.

My bedroom and adjoining bathroom is to be changed, primarily to give me a walk in shower instead of a bath, so everything is getting a makeover.

I have bought linens that I like,Toile de Juoy in blue, the blue colour is a tad grayed not a bright blue and not  at all dark so I need ideas to work around this.

The only things that will not be changing are the doors, windowsills  and the vanity cupboard in the bathroom which are all white, the counter surface the sink sits in on the cupboard will be changed, as will the tile and carpet. My bedroom furniture is light oak and I am keeping that.

Curtains and bed linen will be the same fabric.

I am thinking some deeper blue accents, I do have a lot of blue and white china and a fair bit of deep blue glass, and I was thinking maybe just a touch of another colour, maybe a buttery colour or a  sand, even yellow.

I think maybe the carpet should be pretty much the colour of the oak furniture and this is about when I start to think it is all wrong.

I would really appreciate someone elses point of view..pretty much a clean palette really apart form the linens.

What about turquoise / taupe as a contrasting colour, that would work well with a bathroom or bedding scheme.
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

A touch of yellow would go nicely with blues.  Brings a bit of sunshine into a room.

i love  that antique pattern   how about picking up the palest blue from the pattern for the walls which look fresh with the white  woodwork and then adding some darker blue  in cushions may be even the carpet to match  also add some sunshine yellow like Yorkshire lass  said it would all tie in nicely with your blue and white china may be a nice white vase with some fresh  (from your allotment or garden ) or silk flowers in the same yellow that's me wanting to do mine but iam moving and some one else would get the joy of it

That is a pretty fabric. I've always liked a blue/white combo. So fresh! The carpet choice will be important. If it is brownish my thought would be it might knock down the fresh feel you get walking into a predominantly light blue room, where as a blue or off-white carpet would keep it fresh and clean. As for an accent, I'd probably wait and choose that after the large basics are already put in the room then take a swatch of cloth or some clothing in a color you like, drape it around a lampshade/picture frame/ throw pillow/chair seat to give you an idea of how it would be . Looking at the eBay photo, the bright light green outside the window looks pretty and might add some zip, but also your buttery yellow might do it. We'd love to see a finished room pix!  It might spur me to repaint a room.

Thank you all, it was very helpful. I love the idea of the off white carpet but not so practical for me. I did think of some silver grey in there as the blue has a slight grayed look to it, the background on the fabric is off white with a cream, tinge to it so I thought the yellow may bring that out. I love the idea of the pale blue walls and also a deeper blue carpet.

Oh and must mot forget my dollshouse which will be in that room, I van paint it any colour I like of course, even a pale yellow but with a grey roof.

I am getting very tempted to turn in my light oak bedroom furniture and go with white.Maybe with a delicate length of blue fabric on the wall above the headboard framing the bed.

Keep on comimg with those ideas,

I love the French style of furnshger pale cream or white with  delicate carving  and cameos on the drawer and door fronts   some times with a little stressed paint work

I'm looking at your fabric here Jeannine - and I would try to match up the soft blue/grey of the fabric pattern for at least one wall and a very pale - even softer - grey/white for the others. Together with a silver/grey carpet I can imagine a very restful and pleasing ambiance. (That said, my own bedroom has one wall heather to match the curtains and the others a soft pink while the carpet is - as the rest of my home - a soft sea green. I'm now coming out of my pinks and greens theme phase though!)

Have fun making your choice   .

If you want the bedroom to be a gentle, restful place then stick with tones of the blues and greys in the fabric.  Use sand or yellow only if you need a bright accent but maybe do it with cushions or throws so you cann change them easily and seasonally.  Personally, I love the warm glow of light oak and would keep that.  You'll have enough white in the other woodwork.

You coud also check out these sites which I've been perusing to help with my forthcoming barn conversion - http://www.countryliving.com/homes/decor-ideas/bedroom-designs-gallery#slide-1

The idea of changing colors seasonally always sounds so genteel and lovely. Never happens in our house!

Not really here either but we do have rugs that come our for winter for snuggling on the sofa.  Can't be too precious with 2 dogs who think they own the sofas too.  In the bedroom, I take off the heavy duvet and swap for a sheet and a thin patchwork quilt for summer and that rings the changes.

Jeanine that is a beautiful fabric, I would be inclined to stay with mostly white to show the fabric off, with a silver grey carpet, then use your blue china and glass as accents and a blue cushion and rug in matching colours to highlight the blue in the fabric.  Then just add subtle colour with the greenery of a plant with blue or white flowers, say a streptocarpus which flowers most of the year on a windowsill.  Or a fern in a pretty blue and white pot.

Jeannine

Thank you all for some lovely ideas and smashing links. I love blue and white, I have a lot of old Spode china and , my kitchen has it all over the place with a few red accents. I like the idea of the delicate grey wall .. oh I am quite excited about it. I have made my own bed linens for many years and was trying yesterday to remember when I last splurged on ready mades but I love the deign and I could only find it in the UK. I have some cross stitch that needs to be framed and I think the grey matte may be good on those.. I don't fancy the room being ripped out but finished it will be great and no more trying to climb over the edge of the bath.

Reading all of these comments have made me think that I must be a boring old sod. All of our house is magnolia. The things that change are the accessories i.e. curtains and bed clothes and the very occasional carpet change
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Not too boring Shirlton.   Following a central heating disaster which meant replastering most of the downstairs walls, retiling all downstairs floors and relaying central heating pipes I had insurance cover to get the entire downstairs repainted.  Given all the trauma I was not up to making major colour decisions for so much space at once so had the whole landing, hall, kitchen/diner and living room painted a rich buttermilk cream as there are no doors and they lead into each other.   Each room then has it's own curtains and rugs for individuality.

That was about 8 years ago and I'm only now getting round to thinking I need to change the kitchen and make it fresh and smart but still need neutral colours as I have a mix of painted, oak and cherry furniture in there.   I have a set of Denby Encore crockery that is pale grey with a sweet pea pattern so I'm thinking of pearl grey walls and white woodwork and cupboard doors with striped red, grey and white Roman blinds but I may end up doing something completely different if, say, a piece of fabric jumps out and grabs me.   I have a year to decide while the barn conversion gets done and then we can move everything out and do a thorough job.

Shirlton, no, this is one of the reasons I asked as I have had the same for years. I love the creamy white walls and although I am considering all the options I may well do just that and use the off white of the fabric background. I have always had plain walls and plain coloured carpets then used drapes etc to bring the colour in. Here my daughter painted for me before I got here and my living room etc is taupe with white crown molding etc  it looks very good but I would have been nervous to pick it. My bedroom is green which I hate.

I can see the very very pale grey working but I would have it on all four walls.
