can i take off some of the leaves from my aubergine plant to let more light in ?

I might remove a couple if they were directly covering ripening fruits, but otherwise I would leave them, they are the powerhouse of the plant and are needed.....and watch out for vicious spines!
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Hi I bought a variety called calliope which had good which review outdoors but they are doing badly just not taking off at all- even near eastbourne which claims to be sunniest place in Uk.
anyone recommend an aubergine variety which does well for them outside ?
could be the year I suppose but any advice welcome.
