Hello I'm a newbie!
After being on the waiting list for 6 years I found out today that we have been given a plot!
It looks to be in good order and has been cleared and covered in manure by the previous tenant.  Doesn't appear to have any plants or weeds growing currently.
So my main question is are we too late to grow anything this year or is there something we can plant now?
Thanks
Lindsay

Hiya, linzm, welcome to a4a  :toothy10:
There's still loads you can plant now, even spuds.
Courgettes, squash, beans and peas, beetroot, turnips, swede, if you can find some plants, you can have brassicas of all sorts. We're sowing more carrots this week, plus more lettuce, spring onions and radish.
Happy Growing 2013 :happy7:

If you look at the seeds in the garden centre you'll find loads that are ok to plant. We're so behind anyway that to be honest I've been planting may's seeds in the last week or so because lets face it, how does a seed know that it's June and not May! We've just taken on a plot

This is the prime sowing/plantings season.  Go for it.  Carrots do not like manured ground so look to see if they left an unmanured area.

Sounds as if you are lucky to have taken over a plot in good order.

Try and ask around to see what was planted in which area last year, so you can continue the rotation and not repeat the same crops a second year.

So Beans, courgettes, carrots, brassicas, salad,.  It may be rather late for parsnips, but many people here have had a failure and are just starting again now.  Small pencil thin parsnips can be very tasty.  (They do not like manure either).

For a quick result I would try things like lettuce, French bean speedy or purple tepee.  A pot of parsley from Tesco split into four will grow on very quickly and provide plenty of green.

Ask around for the best source of plants.  I tend to buy a few plants and sows quite a lot.  My source will not have celery plants available until next week.  He has not yet started selling the main over wintering brassicas yet either.  He is a lot better at producing brassica seedlings than me.

I sowed carrots last week just before it rained and they are already popping up.  So I am hoping to do the same again this week.

Thank you all for the tips - much appreciated.

Most salads, all sorts of carrots (check locals for fly advice), beetroots, first ealry spuds if you can get any will get you a crop if the blight stays away, fruit bushes in pots, all sorts of brassicas as plants, savoys as seed (which reminds me I need to sow some soon), Hispi will crop  in the autumn if sown now,  french beans (I'd sow Speedie and CObra), some of the faster shelling french beans (Bridgewater and  Polish CLimber leap to mind, PM me an address if you want seed of either of them) runner beans (go for one of the selfing varieties like Moonlight)  courgetes(Defender would be a good choice) Winter Festival squash (cos it's fast and reliable)...
