Didn't know where to put this....it's probably Basics....anyway, something has been and eaten a whole row of lovely carrot seedlings. So I'm going to try covering the next attempt with fleece, is this sensible? I'd guess the culprits are wood pigeons, though they have left my parsley alone this year...what's the best sort of fleece, I'm a bit bewildered by what's on offer - help please!

depends on how much you want to spend i use scaffolding debris netting on most things and its quite cheap if you have a business near you, but can be got from ebay if needed but i like to use enviromesh on my carrots as this keeps the carrot fly away. I have used fleece in the past but the mesh is easier to use but much more expensive.
you may be a king or a little street sweeper but sooner or later you dance with de reaper.

I'm a big fan of ikea net curtains.  I throw them over things, crops just tend to push them up. Only problem is after a few years they go brittle and start to tear easily and the voles chew holes in them.

Dont blame the wood pigeons unless you have seen it because mice and voles and rats will eat them as well. you have to put something up to keep the lot out

Not to mention deer, slugs and snails ...

Sometimes I wonder how we ever grow anything.

Thanks for replies. I've gone for a big roll of fine fleece, I don't think the damage was slugs which are fairly quiescent this year, and it's certainly not deer! But I do love my home grown carrots, no bought ones taste anything like carrots to me. Onward and upward!
