I'm asking this on behalf of a friend....

She's noticed that quite a few leaves on her young maple tree are
being eaten by something, any ideas anyone?

Looks more like a leaf cutter bee has been getting material for her egg cells than something like caterpillar damage.  There are a few leaf cutters about at the moment.

Thank you Uncle, I'll tell my friend.

I thought leaf cuter bees made a more circular less jagged notches in the leaves.
it looks more like vine weevil damage to me but I'd be happy to be wrong!
