0870 numbers I am guessing.
I have been caught in the past with that. I now have a package with orange that allows me to ring those numbers for free.
Alternatively, there is a web site called "say no to 0870"
you put in the number you need to ring and it will give you alternatives to try. I think Sky are still one that dont have many other numbers tho.

Sky have an 0844 number which is 5p/min at standard BT rates..

When you see the option of a +44............ number that allows you to ring from abroad, you can use this minus the 44 but with a 0 in front of the rest of the number.  This is national rate and not premium rate.

Sometimes you find a freephone number for new customers etc.  There is nothing stopping you using it and getting an internal transfer. 

Sorry you were ripped off by Sky, who are making plenty of money anyway.  Presumably they fleeced you discussing a problem that their equipment/service caused in the first place.  It isn't right - should be freephone.
