My father is asking me to order some seed potatoes online for him.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the best company and best prices for this. I've never ordered them online before, but he's keen to get in early incase there are supply problems because of this years poor potato harvest.

Thanks :sunny:

DT Brown have a good selection.  I have always had good service from them.   Also JBA who posts on here. I will be interested to hear comments from others.   If it is true that people are giving up plots because of the poor crops this year I don't think there will be a shortage but I have ordered mine as I like specific ones and you never know.

Try JBA Seed Potatoes - http://www.jbaseedpotatoes.co.uk/

Hi Carolinej,

Why not go to one of the  Potato days - you can buy individual seed potatoes & therefore try different varieties

What sort of seed potatoes does he want, and how many?

I'll have to check with him. He's sent me away with instructions to find a good supplier, but no more info, lol

I've already ordered the seed potatoes I want but saw some Anya salad potatoes in Sainsbury's yesterday soooooo temptation struck and I bought some. Some to eat and some to find a few square feet to try out on the allotment. We all understand that temptation. But I wondered about sprouting retardents. If the potatoes have been treated to delay sprouting, is there something I can do to negate it?

I've dealt with JBA before and had the commonly reported good experience too... Since I moved to Swindon I've used the local potato day hosted by Pennard Plants as it's less than a mile from my house and it would be foolish not to... I find the slightly higher cost of the tubers is more than compensated for by the  lack of postage costs (always an issue with potatoes by post) as well as the chance to pick the tubers and also the chance to buy just a few of any given variety to experiment with to find out what likes this weird soil we have here...

I quite fancy the idea of growing lots of different varieties. How can I find out if there are any potato days going on around my kneck of the woods?

We have a potato day at Dundry Nursery in Gloucester. The actual weekend this year is the 19th & 20th of January but they have there seed potatoes there from the beginning of January. I get mine from here every year. The range is immense so each year I buy my favourites and try a new variety. You can even buy a few seed potatoes to try them. They are very competitive with there prices much cheaper than anywhere I have seen online.

If you are not to far from Gloucester its well worth the visit. [url]www.dundrynurseries.co.uk/ Try the website for all the info on varieties they offer.

I usually get mine from DT Brown and have never had a problem with them. I also get some from Petes Pet/Garden  shop in Bargoed. Thats where I get my shallots and onion sets too,
